Sample Bequest Provisions

The provisions in your will for making a gift to Miss Porter’s School will depend upon the type of gift and your own circumstances and interests. These model provisions may be helpful to you and your attorney. A bequest may take the form of a percentage of the estate, a dollar amount, or a specific named asset. The illustrated language below employs each of these means.

Residuary Bequest

All the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, I give, devise, and bequeath to Miss Porter’s School, Inc., a nonprofit secondary school in Farmington, Connecticut, for its general purposes.

Percentage Bequest

I give, devise, and bequeath to Miss Porter’s School, Inc., a nonprofit secondary school in Farmington, Connecticut, _____% of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate for its general purposes.

Endowment Fund

I give to Miss Porter’s School, Inc., a nonprofit secondary school in Farmington, Connecticut, the sum of $ ________________, the same to be known as “The _________________________ Endowed Fund,” the income therefore to be used for the school’s general purposes (or describe the specific purpose: faculty support, scholarship, etc.).

Bequest of a Specific Asset

I give and bequeath to Miss Porter’s School, Inc., a nonprofit secondary school in Farmington, Connecticut, [name the specific asset] for the following purposes: If the donor wishes to establish an endowed fund, designate her gift for a specific purpose, or bequeath a tangible asset, she is encouraged to speak with a member of the Development Office staff so the school has a clear understanding of her intentions.
