For This Ancient, Planned Giving Is Not Only Generous but Financially Savvy

Martha Kimball Pomerantz ’77 has both a professional and personal perspective on giving. Her extensive background in finance, including 14 years and counting running the Minneapolis office of Evercore Wealth Management as well as her eight-year service on the MPS Board of Trustees, informs her own giving and the advice she shares with others. That’s why for Martha, naming Miss Porter’s School as one of the beneficiaries of her IRA was “so easy.”

She explains that “your individual heirs will have to pay income taxes when they withdraw from an inherited IRA, meaning that it may be worth only half the original amount to them. It is a wonderful gifting vehicle. It won’t affect my lifestyle, and Miss Porter’s will receive the full benefit.”

Setting up this type of gift is simple. Just access your IRA or 401(k) online, search for beneficiary designation, decide what dollar amount or percentage makes sense, and fill out the simple form.

Donating a planned gift and being a member of the Moonbeams Circle are not the only ways Martha participates in giving to Porter’s. “I love this school, and I know it can’t cover all its needs through tuition. So I want to help now and in the future.” She contributes to the Annual Fund every year and advises all to do the same. You can also have a continual impact through planned gifts. “Participating in the Moonbeams Circle is a wonderful way to continue supporting Miss Porter’s,” Martha adds.
